If everything goes like it should go, I will start a PhD on this very topic. 

Research shows that the new field of persuasive technology has much to contribute to the design of effective motivational interventions (see Using persuasive technology to encourage sustainable behavior. Cees Midden et al, 2008). 

It is especially hopeful because earlier attempts to promote sustainable behavior through purely technological approaches or behavioral approaches often lead to disappointing results.
